What Makes A Successful Audition?
Auditioning for a musical can be a stressful thing for some people. Preparation is the best way to relieve the stress of auditioning and feel more confident.
These are the criteria the the directors will use during your audition.
#1. Vocal Ability
To quote a line from Aladdin, JR..."It's a musical!"
All members of the cast, including those in the Ensemble, must be able to sing. Shouting is not singing.
Successful cast members will be able sing the pitches of their audition song correctly. They will be able to sing loudly when necessary and blend in with others when a group is singing together.
#2. Stage Presence
Successful cast members will convince the directors that you are right for the role. They will have emotion in their voice when singing and delivering their lines, and those emotions will be appropriate for the words they are singing or speaking.
#3. Projection
Not all cast members will have a microphone. Successful cast members will be able to project their voice to the very back of the gymnasium without the aid of a microphone. NO MUMBLING!
This being said, you must make sure not to drown out the other cast members when singing in a group.
#4. Confidence
The best way to be confident is to PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE! If you know your audition song and dialogue, you will come across with a much more confident attitude.
Students always ask if the song lyrics and dialogue lines need to be memorized for the audition. Memorization is not required, but certainly recommended. If you put in the time to memorize your audition, that tells the directors something about your commitment.
#5. Articulation
No audience member likes to come see a musical and not be able to understand the words. Diction is so incredibly important when performing on stage.
When singing or delivering your lines, annunciate everything. The words must be clear to all.
