Let's Get Drumming! (Rhythm Bank #1 and #2)
Now it's time to put all of this together! The .pdf's attached to this assignment give you 41 different one-bar rhythms that use some of the rhythms ("pie", piz-za", "al-li-ga-tor", etc.) and techniques (centre, rim, side, stick click) we learned about on the page "Getting Started".
This assignment also adds sticking to the mix! Sticking means using your right hand (and right drumstick) when the music says "R", and the left hand (and left drumstick) when the music says "L".
Your task will be to practice these 41 one-bar rhythms, then choose 10. You will then record a video of yourself playing those 10 rhythms.
Use a metronome to practice and record your performance. Download a metronome app for your device (they are free) or use the metronome built into Google (just Google the word "metronome"). I would suggest setting the metronome to 80 BPM (beats per minute) but you can set it slower or faster depending on your comfort level.
On the video recording, please announce each rhythm before you play it (using the number above each bar) so that I know which one you are playing. Give yourself a 4-beat count in (using the metronome), then play the rhythm. Also, make sure to be playing the rhythm using the correct technique(s).
Your performance will be graded on the following criteria:
TEMPO
- did you keep a steady beat as you played each bar?
RHYTHM
- did you correctly play the rhythm for each bar you chose?
TECHNIQUE
- did you play the correct part of the drum (centre or rim) when indicated?
POSTURE and STICKING
- did you sit up straight when playing?
- did you use the correct sticking ("R" and "L") when indicated?
COMPLEXITY OF MUSIC CHOICES
- did you choose all the "easy" bars of music or some more difficult ones?
Below are .pdf copies of Rhythm Bank #1 and #2. There are also images of these pages posted below.
I've also included a recording of each bar being played so you can hear what they sound like (those are the .mp3 files).
Good luck and happy drumming!
